Seeking a "better life," my wife Cindy, our 6 month old daughter and
I moved from San Jose to Livermore in early 1992. We moved into the
one and only house that we looked at in Livermore, finding it and
the brand new neighborhood a perfect fit for our lifestyles. We
chose Livermore for its beauty, safety and openness. We were
impressed with the local parks, the safe neighborhoods and the
various downtown activities that were promoted by the Chamber of
Commerce, the Main Street project and the City of Livermore.
After dropping our infant daughter off at grandma's for the day,
we fought the ever increasing traffic to our jobs in Silicon Valley.
Even though we carpooled together, our commute grew from 45 minutes
each way to over 90 minutes each way. Although we both had wonderful
jobs at the Fortune 500 companies we worked at, we grew increasingly
tired of the commute, and time away from family and the local parks
and attractions that the Livermore Valley had to offer.
Even after having a son in 1995, we continued to fight the
traffic to our jobs. I was a Corporate Security Manager and a
Corporate Web Designer, while Cindy was a Systems Engineer. Having
our daughter start to attend school was an even greater challenge -
the carpools, who would pick up, when, etc. We longed for a better
way of life - where we could work closer to home and spend more time
in our community.
In early 2000 Cindy and I both decided to quit our Silicon Valley
jobs. In my case, I already had a transition plan in place, as my
Web design business,
Utkaduck Design, was growing by leaps and bounds and needed to
be managed on a full-time basis. I began to work from our home
office and within 2 weeks Cindy had a job offer from another Fortune
500 company, with a permanent office in Pleasanton. Finally we were
now able to work close to home, saving between 3 to 4 hours a day
each in travel - time we could now spend with our children and
"play" in our community.
I became involved in the
Chamber of
Commerce, where I was immediately asked to join the Ambassador
Committee. I also joined a local business networking organization -
Leadfinders -
whose goals include the promotion of small businesses in the
Livermore Valley.
Our children attend local schools. They have both participated in
recreational
gymnastics, and are currently involved in
competitive
swimming,
Jujitsu
and soccer.
I am an eleven year member of both the
High Technology Crime
Investigation Association and the
American
Society for Industrial Security. Additionally, I am one of only
two certified trainers in the US for the
PPM 2000 line
of software used in the corporate security industry.
